Military’s Path to Reconciliation: What Lies Ahead?

Military Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai has expressed optimism about the military’s involvement in the planned Truth and Reconciliation process. He stated that the military’s primary aim is to achieve internal reconciliation before participating in the national initiative. Although they have received an invitation to join the National Truth and Reconciliation process, Kalouniwai emphasized the importance of completing their internal process first.

The RFMF, he noted, seeks to create an atmosphere of trust and understanding among the public, ensuring that the military has fully reconciled before the national process begins. This internal reconciliation is also intended to prepare soldiers to confidently share their experiences during the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) campaign.

Kalouniwai acknowledged that the reconciliation process is complex and may elicit mixed reactions ranging from skepticism to hope. A significant challenge will be encouraging public participation in the national reconciliation effort. To succeed, engaging Fijians and motivating them to share their stories and experiences is crucial.

Raising awareness about the TRC and facilitating open dialogue during consultations are essential steps. It is important to address difficult questions and express concerns regarding the alignment of the reconciliation process with constitutional provisions before discussions commence. Broad participation and open dialogue are vital for the success of the national Truth and Reconciliation process, and it will ultimately depend on the collective effort to foster healing and understanding across the nation. Active participation in the consultation is necessary to contribute meaningfully to a comprehensive reconciliation effort.
