Commander Ro Jone Kalouniwai has asserted that a coup will not occur under his leadership. In a recent interview with The Lens @177, he emphasized the military’s loyalty to the current government.
“It will never happen,” he stated. “Why should I lose everything that we have built from 2022 up until today? The way we have started to transform the RFMF, the way we are building this restorative reconciliation process with those that have been affected.”
When questioned about whether certain political actions annoyed him, Ro Kalouniwai mentioned that he makes a point to stay out of politics. “It’s not good for me, it’s not proper that I get involved with politics. I have officers to provide me with their briefs, with their advice, and that’s where I put my eyes and ears on.”
He reflected on 2022 as a critical and fragile moment for the RFMF, noting, “It could have broken the RFMF, but we kept things together. I had to set the direction for them, tell them which way we will be going, why we were doing this, and what would be the outcome for us.”
Regarding any dissent within the ranks, Ro Kalouniwai reported no such issues. “Things are changing, and we have a situation where the Opposition is split in two but that’s politics. That’s for them to resolve. We won’t get involved in it.”
