The first baby of the new millennium was born to a couple in Ba just five minutes into January 1, 2000. According to reports, the parents named their son Samisoni Vu Ruanaudolu, with the last name signifying “2000” in Fijian.
Luke Waqalevu and Merewalesi Lewe, both from Nawaqarua, Ba, expressed their joy over the birth. Samisoni weighed 3.95 kilograms and arrived at Ba Mission Hospital at 12:05 AM, marking him as the first boy born in the new millennium, and he is expected to receive a monetary reward from the Government.
The couple already has one other son, who is five years old. Mr. Waqalevu indicated that he learned about the potential $5,000 reward for the first millennium baby only after Samisoni was born. He mentioned his intention to donate part of the reward to his church if they received it.
Additionally, the first girl born in the new millennium also came from the western region. A baby girl weighing 3.67 kilograms was delivered to 21-year-old Joshika Chand at Lautoka Hospital at 1:10 AM. This marks the first child for Ms. Chand and her husband, Umesh Chand. Ms. Chand expressed her plans to open a bank account for her daughter if she indeed received the award for being the first baby girl of the millennium.
