The Civic Centre in Suva was vibrant on Tuesday as it hosted a celebration for the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival. Organized by the Chinese community in Fiji, the event showcased a variety of performances that fostered friendship between diverse cultures.

This festival, observed on the 14th day of the 8th month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, is traditionally a time for family gatherings and express gratitude for the harvest. Families came together under the bright full moon to appreciate its beauty and participate in time-honored customs. The occasion not only honored Chinese heritage but also encouraged local community involvement in a shared cultural experience.

Co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Fiji, the Chinese Cultural Centre, and the Department of Culture and Tourism of Hubei Province in China, the festival formed part of the “Mid-Autumn Festival – A Moon to Remember” initiative, aiming to promote themes of unity, gratitude, and cultural diversity worldwide.

The program, titled “Experience Hubei’s Performance in Fiji – A Melodious Bridge of Friendship,” featured performances from 17 artists from Fiji, as well as international talents. The activities included traditional dances, instrumental music, and acrobatics that highlighted the richness of Chinese cultural heritage.

A standout moment of the night was the captivating dragon boat Tune performed by the talented Ruan Guanghui, a notable female artist known for her musical skills. This piece set a celebratory tone, resonating deeply with those in attendance.

Following that was “A Myriad of Horses Galloping,” an instrumental performance by Wu Lingyun, a nationally recognized gold medallist from the China National Instrumental Competition, which transported the audience across China’s vast landscapes through sound.

Dance performances, guided by dancers Peng Ziyu and Wang Rui Xue, depicted the elegance and traditions of Chinese culture. An impressive acrobatic act, “STRENGTH,” by Hou Meng Yang and Bai Shi Yang mesmerized the crowd with their skill and precision.

A local flavor was added by Hibiscus contestant Miss Fiji Fashion Week Pepe Malani, who delivered a heartfelt rendition of “Ave Maria,” symbolizing cultural connections between Chinese and Fijian traditions.

The evening also featured an engaging magic show titled “Enhancing Handcrafts – Yearly Abundance,” presented by internationally acclaimed magician Wu Songtao, who captivated the audience with his tricks that illustrated the festival’s themes of creativity and unity.

As the event progressed, the performances intertwined beautifully, leaving attendees with a sense of pride and a deep connection through cultural exchange. The final act, “CHINA IN THE LIGHTS,” showcased powerful performances from singers Yu Jingming and Hong Jingjing, leaving a lasting sense of community.
