The Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma has made a decision to refrain from using kava barrels as a fundraising method. This announcement was made by Manasa Vatanitawake, the secretary of the church’s communication department, during a weeklong conference where the issue was brought to attention.
Vatanitawake noted that there were discussions about whether kava barrels should serve as a fundraising approach for the church. The consensus from the conference was that this was not an appropriate method for generating funds.
Instead, the church encourages alternative fundraising efforts such as choir competitions, Sunday soli, and running a bazaar on Saturdays. Vatanitawake emphasized that these ideas are better suited as fundraising activities to support the church and its congregation.
This decision aligns with a call from the church’s President, the Rev Dr. Semisi Turagavou, urging ministers to limit kava consumption and adhere to cigarette restrictions. Vatanitawake highlighted ongoing concerns regarding excessive kava drinking and smoking, which the church aims to address.
The intent behind this decision is to promote healthier practices within the congregation and discourage activities associated with excessive kava drinking and late-night gatherings, which the elders believe are not conducive to a healthy lifestyle.
