Methodist Church Rejects Kava Fundraiser: A Call for Change

The Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma has decided not to hold kava barrels as a fundraising method. Manasa Vatanitawake, the secretary of the communication department, confirmed this decision, mentioning that the topic was discussed during the recent weeklong conference.

During the meeting, questions arose about the appropriateness of using kava barrels for fundraising. The conference ultimately concluded that this was not a suitable approach. Vatanitawake suggested alternative fundraising ideas such as choir competitions, Sunday services, or organizing a bazaar on Saturdays, which they believe are better ways to raise funds for the church and its congregation.

This decision aligns with President Rev Dr. Semisi Turagavou’s call for ministers to limit kava consumption and tobacco use. The leaders of the church have emphasized the importance of reducing excessive kava drinking and smoking, a message directed not only to ministers but to the entire congregation. The concern is that kava fundraising could encourage unhealthy habits, such as prolonged socializing and excessive drinking, which is why church elders believe it’s not an appropriate way to raise funds.
