Methodist Church Pushes for Tax Exemption in Fiji

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma plans to submit a request to the Fijian Government for tax exemptions for non-government organizations (NGOs), including churches. Lako Yani Management Pte Limited, which manages the development of church properties, reported a profit of $2.9 million for the 2023 financial year, up from $1.2 million in 2022. However, the overall income decreased, primarily due to reduced earnings from the Navuso Agricultural Technical School.

Ms. Qoro emphasized that the Methodist Church is focused on serving its members and performing mission work, stating that any profits generated are reinvested back into the church’s activities. Changes to tax laws in 2016 mandated the taxation of net income from entities classified as charities, arguing that such organizations competed with for-profit businesses, necessitating a level playing field.

The Fiscal Review Committee pointed out last year that taxing charities limits their resources, which are vital during times of high need. It also noted that the law discourages NGOs from making investments that would provide a steady and sustainable source of independent funding.
