Methodist Church of Fiji Says No to Kava Fundraisers

The Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma has opted not to hold kava barrels for fundraising purposes. This decision was confirmed by Manasa Vatanitawake, the secretary of the communication department, who noted that concerns over the fundraiser were discussed during the weeklong conference.

During the meeting, questions were raised about whether kava barrels should be used as a fundraising method for the church. The conference concluded that this approach was not appropriate, instead advocating for alternative fundraising activities such as choir competitions, Sunday soli, and Saturday bazaars.

Vatanitawake explained that the decision aligns with President Rev Dr Semisi Turagavou’s recommendations for ministers to minimize kava consumption and restrict smoking. The leadership has emphasized the importance of reducing excessive kava drinking and tobacco use, encouraging the entire congregation to adopt healthier practices.

The elders expressed their belief that fundraising associated with kava drinking could promote unhealthy behaviors, which contributed to their stance against this method of fundraising.
