Methodist Church of Fiji Cracks Down on Kava Consumption Among Ministers

The Methodist Church of Fiji has expressed its disapproval of lay ministers displaying physical characteristics reminiscent of excessive kava consumption, specifically citing scaly skin on their hands, legs, and faces. During a media briefing, general secretary Reverend Dr. Jolame Lasawa highlighted the church’s recognition of internal issues that require adjustments, including a review of the curriculum for lay ministers and a directive encouraging pastors to avoid worldly habits.

Lasawa emphasized the importance of setting a strong example for the church community. He expressed concern over behaviors such as smoking and excessive kava consumption, noting that a recent inquiry revealed some ministers did admit to these practices. They have been verbally instructed to cease these activities.

Additionally, the church plans to review its curriculum at Davuilevu Theological College to address contemporary issues and better equip ministers to tackle societal challenges. Lasawa stated that feedback from ministers and respected leaders has driven this initiative.

He underscored the significance of theological training at Davuilevu, acknowledging complaints from educational institutions regarding the curriculum’s need for updates to reflect current events in Fiji. Discussions are underway to ensure ministers are prepared for the social realities they encounter, especially concerning the welfare of children and youth.

The church is committed to ensuring the safety and prosperous future of the youth, actively engaging with key stakeholders to combat drug-related issues in the community.
