Methodist Church of Fiji Calls for Constitutional Review and Leadership Reform

The Methodist Church of Fiji has requested a review of its Constitution. Newly appointed President, the Rev. Dr. Semisi Turagavou, urged all ministers and dignitaries to avoid smoking and practice moderation with kava. He emphasized the importance of leading by example, stating, “We should be advocates of good,” and adding that a healthy lifestyle should start within the church leadership.

Speaking at the 2024 Methodist Conference at Centenary Church in Suva, Turagavou proposed this review as part of ten initiatives to commemorate the church’s 60th anniversary. He highlighted that clerical appointments, particularly for conference departments, heads of schools, and chaplaincy roles, should prioritize merit and performance.

Turagavou also called for a roving minister in the church’s Department of Evangelism and Outreach to address disputes and tensions within communities. He underscored the need for an active committee focused on evangelism and outreach, which he believes is crucial for the church’s mission. He stressed the importance of training ministers and dignitaries to be visionary leaders, effective counselors, skilled mediators, and responsible asset managers.
