The Methodist Church of Fiji is advocating for a review of its Constitution. The new church president, Rev Dr Semisi Turagavou, urged all ministers and dignitaries to avoid smoking and exercise self-discipline regarding kava consumption. He emphasized that church leaders should embody healthy and productive lifestyles, stating, “We should be advocates of good.”
Rev Turagavou made these remarks during his address at the 2024 Methodist Conference held at the Centenary Church in Suva, where he presented one of ten proposals to support the church’s 60th anniversary. He called for clerical appointments within the church, especially in conference departments, heads of schools, and chaplaincy roles, to be merit-based, asserting that appointments of superintendents should reflect their performance.
He also highlighted the necessity of having a roving minister within the church’s Department of Evangelism and Outreach. This role would address disputes and controversial issues within church communities. Rev Turagavou stressed the need for an active and effective evangelism and outreach committee, noting that it is essential for the church’s mission.
Furthermore, he pointed out the importance of training ministers and dignitaries to develop into visionary leaders, proficient counselors, competent mediators, practical theologians, and reliable asset managers with a focus on ecological and ecumenical perspectives.
