Methodist Church Leaders Urged to Curb Yaqona and Smoking Amid Membership Decline

The President of the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma, Reverend Semisi Turagavou, has once again urged ministers and deaconesses to reduce their consumption of yaqona (grog) and smoking. He highlighted this message, among other significant issues, during his opening address at the 2024 Methodist Church Conference held at the Centenary Church in Suva on Friday.

Reverend Turagavou articulated concerns regarding factors contributing to a decline in church membership, stating that the church has faced criticism for excessive yaqona consumption and smoking by its leaders in the presence of church members. He noted that some affiliated individuals have left the Methodist Church due to what they perceive as inconsistent and impractical leadership styles.

“Our followers have expressed their dissatisfaction and lack of confidence in the leadership from both circuit and divisional levels,” he remarked. He emphasized that the behavior and leadership styles of some ministers have distorted the image of Christ.

The Reverend pointed out that many devoted church members are leaving to join other denominations and faiths. He encouraged ministers and deaconesses to improve their conduct and work towards restoring the true image of Christ within the church. He stated, “We cannot keep relying on experienced or seniority within our families; we need to strike a balance between seniority and performance.”
