The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma has officially backed the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Reconciliation and Restoration Programme. This initiative is designed to promote healing and strengthen unity among both military personnel and the wider community, reflecting a dedication to mutual development and national advancement.
Reverend Jolame Lasawa, the Church’s General Secretary, highlighted the significance of this programme. “We are endorsing it, especially considering the military’s ongoing efforts. They presented the programme to the President and me, and we engaged in discussions regarding the updates,” Reverend Lasawa stated.
He also commended the government for introducing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. “We are in favor of the notion of truth and reconciliation. We have designated one of our representatives to participate in what the Government is pursuing,” he added.
The Steering Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is actively engaging with diverse stakeholders, including civil society leaders, religious organizations, political entities, and media outlets, to refine the legal framework.
Chaired by Sashi Kiran, the Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, the Committee’s objective is to establish the legal, governance, and financial structures necessary for the Commission. The chair will provide direct reports to the Prime Minister.
