The seizure of 14.4 kilograms of methamphetamine that transited through Fiji from Canada to Australia underscores the challenges faced in combating the illegal drug trade.
Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua commented on the recent seizure of the drugs by Australian authorities, noting the importance of strengthening Fiji’s borders even though it was only a transit point in this case.
Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized that the lengths to which criminals went to conceal the drugs highlighted the necessity for strict border controls and collaboration between international border authorities.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) reported that a Canadian national was arrested while carrying the drugs, which were hidden in plastic packages wrapped in towels soaked in vinegar and coffee beans.
The drugs had an estimated street value of $A13.4 million ($F19 million).
AFP detective Acting Superintendent Steve Wiggins pointed out the broader impact of methamphetamine on the Australian community, indicating there were more than 10,000 methamphetamine-related hospitalizations in 2021-2022.
