Mercy Commission Under Fire: Transparency and Trust in Question

Deputy Opposition Whip Ketan Lal emphasizes the importance of transparency and independence within the Mercy Commission, highlighting that its decisions are crucial to maintaining justice and fairness in society. He raised concerns about the membership of the Commission, questioning who the members are and the process by which they are appointed.

Lal also inquired about the qualifications and criteria that determine the suitability of these members for such an essential role. He noted, “What degree of influence does the government exert over this commission?” and stressed that these inquiries are significant.

He warned that a lack of transparency in the appointment process or excessive political influence could undermine public trust and raise doubts about the Commission’s impartiality. Lal stated that it is vital for the public to know who is on the Commission and the extent of political influence on its decisions.

“Without clear answers, we risk compromising the integrity of a body that must remain independent and free from government interference,” he added.

In response, Prime Minister Rabuka asserted that the recent actions of the Mercy Commission, including pardons for George Speight and Shane Stevens, followed due process without external interference. He described these decisions as part of the nation’s efforts toward reconciliation and healing, emphasizing the need for Fiji to reflect on its past to create a united and progressive future.
