Mercy Commission Under Fire: Is Government Influence Compromising Justice?

Deputy Opposition Whip Ketan Lal emphasized the importance of transparency and independence for the Mercy Commission, noting that its decisions are foundational to justice and fairness in society. He raised concerns about the members of the Commission, questioning their selection process and qualifications.

Lal stated, “It is essential for public scrutiny to identify the members of the Mercy Commission and the criteria for their appointment.” He also inquired about the extent of government influence over the Commission, asserting that these concerns are significant.

He pointed out that if the appointment process lacks clarity or is unduly affected by political influences, it could jeopardize public trust and the Commission’s ability to function impartially. “It is vital that the public is aware of the Commission’s composition and any potential political pressures on its decisions,” he added.

Lal warned that without clear information, the integrity of the Commission might be at risk, necessitating its independence from government interference.

In response, Prime Minister Rabuka affirmed that the recent actions of the Mercy Commission, including the pardons granted to George Speight and Shane Stevens, were conducted following due process and without external influence. He characterized these decisions as integral to Fiji’s ongoing journey toward reconciliation, suggesting that reflecting on the past is essential for building a united future.
