Meet the Fijian Leader Shining Bright in Washington Schools!

Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old from Namata Village in Tailevu, is making a significant impact at Everett High School in Everett, Washington, where she serves as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president. With a student body of 1,606 from grades 9 to 12, her role as a Fijian student fills her family with pride, despite her parents living in Fiji while she resides with her aunt Selenia and uncle Aseri Kunawave in the U.S.

Deborah shared that her decision to run for ASB president was fueled by encouragement from fellow students and teachers. Her victory on February 29 came as a surprise to her, revealing the extent of her influence within the school. Winning with a majority of the votes brought her immense joy and taught her that “the Lord has a plan for me in this life.”

Although born in the U.S., Deborah is proud of her Fijian heritage and considers herself a daughter of Tailevu. She was elected president on September 4, after attending Everett High School since 2021.

Her mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, described Deborah as a warm and confident child who always aimed to uplift others. A talented singer, Deborah has sung the American National Anthem at various events, including her school’s volleyball and football games.

Recently, Deborah participated in a leadership camp organized by her school district in Mt Adams. Attended by nearly 500 students, the camp aimed to train student leaders without the distraction of phones and gadgets. Deborah found the experience transformative, stating that the six days spent there were among the best of her life, filled with personal growth and lasting connections.

Additionally, she was recognized as one of the three Rotary Club of Everett’s Students of the Month for October. This honor acknowledges outstanding high school students for their accomplishments and potential. Her teachers praised her for leading with kindness and inspiring others around her.

In offering advice to young people, Deborah encouraged them to seek support from those who uplift them and to lean on faith through prayer, as it can bring daily joy and positively impact those around them.
