Mediation Set to Avert FRA Workers’ Strike: What’s at Stake?

The Ministry of Employment has organized a mediation session that will involve the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) and the Construction Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF). Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh announced that both parties have consented to engage in the mediation, which will be facilitated by the ministry’s mediation team.

Singh mentioned that the FRA staff union has been reached out to by the ministry, and both workers and employers have agreed to participate in a mediation meeting scheduled for next Wednesday. The objective of this meeting is to resolve issues stemming from over 100 FRA workers who voted in favor of striking.

“This initiative is part of how we promote dialogue and negotiations within the ministry,” Singh stated. The workers, who are represented by CETWUF, are seeking a salary increase and adjustments for the cost of living, which have not been updated since 2017. They have voiced their discontent regarding management’s failure to address the union’s demands.
