For the first time, the media will be allowed to observe the destruction of a substantial 4.1-tonne drug seizure in Nadi. This announcement was made by Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, John Rabuku, who provided insights regarding the plan for the drug disposal.

Recently, the High Court in Suva granted approval for the state’s application to destroy the large stash of drugs that has been under police custody since early this year. Mr. Rabuku indicated that the police are currently finalizing the details of the destruction plan, which will then be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution.

Mr. Rabuku confirmed that once the plan is finalized, the media will receive an invitation to witness the destruction. He noted that after submitting the plan, there will be a 14-day window to notify the High Court prior to the actual destruction event. The plan will include crucial information such as the time and location of the destruction.

As this situation unfolds, the invitation for media participation in such a significant act serves to promote transparency in the handling of illegal substances and underscores the government’s commitment to combating drug trafficking. The public display of the drug destruction can also serve as a deterrent, emphasizing the continuous efforts of authorities to tackle drug-related issues within the community.

This upcoming event is not only a critical step in the legal process surrounding drug enforcement but also a hopeful display of the community’s resolve against illegal drug activities.
