May 31, 2026: Strong Wind Warning in Effect for Taveuni, Yasawa, Lau-Lomaiviti, Kadavu, Southern Bua and Ra-Rakiraki as Easterlies Reach 46 km/h with Gusts to 55 km/h and Rough Seas

Stormy weather over Fiji's coastline with dark clouds and strong waves.

A moist easterly wind flow continues to affect Fiji, with a strong wind warning in force for several islands and coastal areas. The warning covers land areas of Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Yasawa group, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, and the coastal areas of southern Bua and Ra–Rakiraki. Elsewhere, easterly winds are moderate to fresh and gusty at times.

For the warned areas, easterly winds of about 46 km/h with gusts up to 55 km/h are expected, with seas described as rough. These winds are forecast to ease and shift to northeasterly from tomorrow. Elsewhere around the group, moderate to fresh easterly winds and gusts are expected, and sea conditions are also rough in many places.

Cloudy periods and some showers are likely over Navua–Suva–Nausori, Serua–Namosi–Naitasiri–Rewa–Tailevu–Ra, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Kadavu and nearby islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Most other districts should be fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers. Isolated afternoon or evening thunderstorms are possible across the main islands.

Temperatures will remain largely steady through the next day or two. For Navua, Suva and Nausori the maximum today is around 29°C, with a low near 22°C and a maximum near 29°C tomorrow; a similar pattern is forecast for Natadradave/Korovou. Nadi, Lautoka and Ba are likely to see daytime highs near 31°C with nighttime lows around 21–22°C. Sigatoka and the Coral Coast will be a little cooler by day, around 30°C, while Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and Rotuma are generally near 29–30°C for daytime maxima with overnight minima in the low 20s.

People in the areas under the strong wind warning should take care, especially along exposed coasts and for small boats, as rough seas and gusty easterlies may affect coastal operations and marine activities. Conditions are expected to ease from tomorrow as winds back northeasterly, but cloudy skies, occasional showers and a risk of isolated thunderstorms will persist in several districts.
