May 22, 2026 – Fiji forecast: Trough approaches from the west with widespread showers, isolated thunderstorms and flash-flood risk as easterly winds shift later today

Stormy weather with dark clouds over lush green Fijian landscape and palm trees.

An easterly wind flow prevails across Fiji with a trough of low pressure approaching from the west. That trough is expected to affect the group from later today, bringing an increase in showers and the chance of isolated thunderstorms through the weekend. Isolated heavy falls are possible and localized, persistent downpours could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Cloudy periods with brief showers are expected this evening and overnight for Yasawa, Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, Taveuni, and the Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu groups, along with nearby smaller islands. Fine weather will persist today over many parts of the western and northern main islands including Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Sigatoka/Coral Coast, Tavua, Rakiraki and Labasa, but these areas should also expect showers and isolated thunderstorms to develop from later today and become more occasional tomorrow.

Winds are moderate from the east today and are expected to shift east to northeast from tomorrow. Seas are currently moderate. The outlook for Sunday is for occasional rain, heavy at times with a few thunderstorms; winds are forecast to become moderate to fresh from the north to northwest and may be gusty during heavier falls, with seas building to moderate to rough.

Daily temperature ranges remain largely warm and stable: many coastal centres report daytime maximums around 29–32°C today, with overnight minimums commonly in the low 20s. Nadi/Lautoka/Ba are forecast near 32°C today (tomorrow 23–31°C), while Labasa is the warmest today at about 33°C (tomorrow 23–32°C). Rotuma remains under a southeast flow today with fine weather now but will see the trough from tomorrow; Rotuma’s temperatures are near 32°C today and around 25–31°C into the next couple of days.

Because isolated heavy falls and localized persistent rain may cause flash flooding, residents in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas are advised to take the possibility seriously and keep an eye on further updates as the trough moves over the group. Marine conditions will deteriorate through Sunday where seas are expected to rise.
