May 21, 2026 Fiji forecast: West-approaching trough brings frequent showers and thunderstorms, with localised flash-flood risk into Saturday

Stormy weather over tropical beach with palm trees and ocean waves.

A southeast wind flow prevails over the Fiji group, but a trough of low pressure and associated cloud and showers is expected to approach from the west later on Friday. This system will spread across the islands over the next few days, bringing increasing rain and the risk of thunderstorms, particularly from tomorrow into Saturday.

Through to midnight tomorrow, expect cloudy periods with brief showers across Navua, Suva and Nausori, Serua-Namosi and Tailevu-Naitasiri-Ra. Much of the northern and eastern interior—Southern Bua, Eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove including Taveuni, plus nearby smaller islands—along with the Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu groups, should be mainly fine apart from brief showers and possible afternoon thunderstorms. Elsewhere around the main islands conditions will be generally fine with isolated afternoon or evening showers for now.

Showers are expected to become more frequent from the west and then spread to the rest of the country later tomorrow. Nights will be cool. Current winds are moderate from the southeast, becoming easterly from tomorrow, and seas are moderate. Localised afternoon thunderstorms and heavier showers are possible in the more unsettled areas.

The outlook for Saturday is for occasional showers over most places with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls expected. Localised heavy rain may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Winds are forecast to be moderate to fresh from the north and seas moderate to rough.

Local details: Navua/Suva/Nausori, Natadradave/Korovou, Yasawa/Mamanuca, Sigatoka/Coral Coast, Nadi/Lautoka/Ba, Tavua/Rakiraki, Labasa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, Taveuni, Lau and Lomaiviti, and Kadavu all see daytime maximums around 29°C today and tomorrow with lows near 21°C, then a slightly cooler Saturday with lows near 23°C and maxima around 28°C. Rotuma remains mainly fine with brief showers, moderate southeast winds and moderate seas, with a daytime maximum near 31°C; tomorrow’s forecast low is near 21°C and Saturday is expected to see cloudy periods with brief showers.
