May 16, 2026: Fiji Forecast Warns of Cloudy Periods, Showers and Isolated Thunderstorms as Weak Trough Lingers Across the Islands

Stormy weather over Fiji coastline with dark clouds and rough sea.

A weak trough of low pressure lying over the group, combined with a prevailing southeasterly wind flow, will keep much of Fiji under patchy cloud and showers for the next couple of days. The slow-moving system is expected to bring the most persistent wet weather to parts of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and nearby islands, while the western and southern coasts will remain mostly fine with only isolated afternoon showers.

Cloudy periods with some showers are likely over Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri‑Ra, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, as well as Kadavu and surrounding smaller islands. Isolated thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain are possible in these areas, so expect sudden downpours and brief intense activity. Elsewhere around the country conditions will generally be fine apart from the chance of an isolated afternoon or evening shower. Nights will feel cool across most areas.

Southeasterly winds will be moderate to fresh and gusty at times. Sea conditions are expected to be moderate to rough in many coastal waters. Mariners and those using small craft should exercise caution in these conditions, and beachgoers should be mindful of rougher surf and changing conditions offshore.

Local daytime highs will range from the low 29s around Suva and northern towns to about 32 degrees Celsius in parts of the west. For example, Navua/Suva/Nausori are forecast around 23–29°C, Nadi/Lautoka/Ba about 22–32°C, and Labasa and Savusavu near 22–30°C. Taveuni, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and Kadavu can expect cloudy periods with showers and similar daily ranges around 22–30°C. Rotuma remains under a southeast wind flow with cloudy periods and showers, moderate to fresh winds, moderate to rough seas, and temperatures near 25–31°C.

The outlook for Monday shows the trough lingering, with similar patterns continuing: cloudy periods with showers persisting over the same island groups and the possibility of isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls. Conditions elsewhere are expected to remain largely fine with only isolated afternoon or evening showers, and nights staying cool.
