The coaching style of Assistant Coach Aaron Mauger is proving to be highly beneficial for the Flying Fijians, according to head coach Mick Byrne. In an interview with SUNsports, Byrne highlighted Mauger’s exceptional rugby intelligence, stating that players are gaining invaluable insights during their training sessions.

Mauger, a former All Blacks second-five eighth with experience in 46 Tests and 89 Super Rugby matches with the Crusaders, has previously served as head coach for both the Highlanders and Moana Pasifika. Byrne described Mauger’s approach as being akin to a teacher, focusing on detailed instruction.

The Flying Fijians are set to face a tough challenge against the USA in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-final, scheduled for tonight at 10:05 PM in Tokyo, Japan. Byrne acknowledged that the USA is a well-coached team that plays an expansive style of rugby, emphasizing their physicality upfront and strong kicking game.

Byrne noted the importance of being prepared for the structural play of the USA, expressing confidence in his team’s ability to match them physically. The return of players Meli Derenalagi, Kitione Salawa, and Elia Canakaivata has also bolstered the team’s performance during the tournament. Players have been instructed to maintain possession and adhere to their gameplan.
