A double-storey building in Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga, was completely destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The incident occurred outside the Sigatoka Fire Boundary, confirmed National Fire Authority (NFA) CEO Puamau Sowani, who reported that the Sigatoka Fire Station received an emergency call around 2:30 AM.

Upon arrival at the scene, the fire brigade found the building engulfed in flames and quickly moved to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures. Cooperation with the Korolevu fire team helped manage the situation. Although the fire was extinguished after considerable efforts, the top floor of the building suffered total destruction.

The building belonged to Hari Shankar, 69, who was alerted to the fire by his son-in-law, Rohit Chand, while he and his wife were asleep. The structure housed a shopping complex with four small shops on the ground floor, including a kava shop, while the upper level contained a nightclub and the owner’s apartment.

Mr. Sowani estimated the damage at approximately $750,000 and mentioned that an investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire. He reiterated the importance of fire safety, urging residents to be vigilant in protecting their homes.

This incident serves as a critical reminder about fire safety awareness, highlighting the need for preventive measures in both commercial and residential properties. The quick response of local fire teams helped mitigate further damage, showcasing the importance of community resources in emergencies. As residents come together to support those affected by this incident, it demonstrates the strength of community bonds in times of crisis.
