Tevita Kapawale, accused of multiple murders, has requested bail today from Justice Dane Tuiqereqere. Kapawale faces five charges of murder, one of attempted murder, and another for intimidation. The allegations stem from an incident on May 18, 2021, when he is said to have killed five crew members aboard the FV Tiro 2 in Fijian waters following a heated argument.
The crew members allegedly murdered include Benjamin Mattaputty, Eme Warma, Alfat Kodri, Samuela Sukera, and Qiritavabea Cagilabakomeli. Additionally, Kapawale is accused of attempting to murder Kaminieli Vucago and intimidating Mitieli Cama.
During the court proceedings, Kapawale stated he is the primary provider for his family, which includes his wife, children, and parents. However, state lawyer Triveshni Sharma opposed the bail, arguing that the severity of the charges warranted a denial. She contended that Kapawale’s father is employed and therefore he is not the sole breadwinner, a claim that Kapawale countered by asserting his father, being over 60, requires assistance.
Sharma further argued that granting bail would set a troubling precedent for others facing similar severe charges and highlighted Kapawale’s previous failures to appear in court while on bail. She stressed concerns about his potential compliance with court appearances and noted the case’s public significance, as it carries a mandatory life sentence.
Justice Tuiqereqere is expected to make a decision regarding the bail application on the 15th of this month.
