The former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, Captain Tevita Korovou, has taken on the role of programme instructor for the Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at the Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located at the Nasinu Campus. Korovou, who previously served as the head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), recently launched this Certificate Programme aimed at equipping participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills across various martial arts disciplines.

The programme includes training in Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. Its goal is to promote a well-rounded approach to martial arts training, enhancing participants’ physical fitness, mental and spiritual well-being, and self-defence capabilities.

During the launch, Professor Govinda Lingam, a Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized that martial arts offer more than physical training; they represent a transformational journey. He noted, “We are not just launching a programme; we are opening doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth. Martial arts is for everyone—regardless of age, background, or physical ability.”

Lingam expressed confidence that Captain Korovou would create a safe and encouraging environment where each student can progress at their own pace while being part of an institution that values mutual respect and growth. He further highlighted the unique aspect of the programme, which combines technical skills with valuable life lessons, teaching participants how to stay calm under pressure, overcome challenges with focus, and prioritize continuous self-improvement.

Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean of Learning and Teacher at CHE, described the initiative as a significant step in the university’s commitment to providing a diverse array of educational opportunities that align with students’ interests and aspirations. He stated that the short course programme would offer a thorough understanding of various martial arts techniques under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Urging students to enroll, Alasa emphasized the programme’s potential to equip them with essential skills and confidence. Suraj Singh, Head of Department for Secondary and Sports Education, added that as society grapples with increasingly complex challenges, the values and skills imparted by martial arts are especially pertinent today.

This six-week short course is designed to foster a holistic approach to martial arts training, allowing participants to enhance their physical fitness, self-defence skills, and overall well-being. Singh pointed out that martial arts not only involves combat but also fosters a mindset that helps individuals maintain composure during difficult situations, promoting humility in the process.
