Martial Arts Revolution: FNU Launches Groundbreaking Programme!

Fiji National University’s College of Humanities and Education has inaugurated the Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at the Nasinu Campus.

This Certificate Programme aims to provide participants with an in-depth understanding and practical skills across various Martial Arts disciplines. Training will cover Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo, promoting a comprehensive approach to martial arts that enhances physical fitness, mental resilience, spiritual growth, and self-defense skills.

During the launch, Professor Govinda Lingam, Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the college, emphasized that Martial Arts encompasses more than physical activity; it represents a path to personal transformation. He stated, “Today, we are not just launching a programme, but we are opening doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth.”

Professor Lingam highlighted that Martial Arts is inclusive for individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and physical abilities. He expressed confidence in Captain Korovou to create a safe and supportive environment for students to learn and thrive at their own pace within a framework of mutual respect.

The significance of the programme extends beyond technical training, as it imparts vital life lessons. “Martial Arts is a way of life – it teaches us how to remain calm in adversity, overcome challenges with determination, and build a mindset that values continuous self-improvement,” he added.

Dr. Victor Alasa, the CHE Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching, remarked that this initiative represents a pivotal moment in the university’s dedication to providing diverse educational opportunities that align with student interests. He encouraged students to enroll, saying, “Our experienced instructors will guide students through rigorous training, helping them build confidence and essential skills.”

Suraj Singh, Head of the Department of Secondary and Sports Education, noted the growing relevance of Martial Arts values and skills in a complex society. He reiterated that the six-week course is designed to equip participants with practical proficiency in various Martial Arts while promoting overall well-being.

Captain Tevita Korovou, a military background instructor for the programme, aims to instill discipline and a positive mindset in participants, reinforcing that Martial Arts teaches individuals to manage challenging situations with composure and humility.
