Captain Tevita Korovou, the former bodyguard of the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and a former head of martial arts for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, is now the program instructor for the newly launched Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Program at Fiji National University’s College of Humanities, located at the Nasinu Campus.

This Certificate Program is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding and hands-on experience in various martial arts disciplines, including Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo. The initiative aims to promote a holistic approach to martial arts training, helping participants improve their physical fitness, mental discipline, spiritual awareness, and self-defense skills.

Professor Govinda Lingam, Chief Guest and a professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, emphasized that martial arts extends beyond mere physical exercise; it is a transformative journey. He stated, “We are not just launching a program but opening doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth,” inviting individuals of all ages and backgrounds to engage in martial arts.

Lingam expressed confidence that Captain Korovou would foster a safe and supportive learning environment, enabling students to learn at their own pace and cultivate empowerment and respect within Fiji National University.

Dr. Victor Alasa, Associate Dean of Learning and Teacher at the College of Humanities and Education, described the program as a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to offering diverse educational opportunities. He highlighted that the short course will equip students with a solid understanding of various martial arts techniques under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Suraj Singh, Head of the Department of Secondary and Sports Education, addressed the relevance of martial arts in today’s complex society, acknowledging the values and skills it instills. He noted, “This short course runs for six weeks, and its purpose is to equip participants with a thorough understanding and practical proficiency in diverse martial arts. This program aims to enhance physical fitness, self-defense abilities, and overall well-being.”

Singh added that martial arts not only involve combat techniques but also foster emotional control and humility, providing individuals with the tools to navigate challenging circumstances calmly.
