Marshall Islands Takes Historic Step Towards a Nuclear-Free Future

Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Secretary General, Baron Waqa, has praised the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) for its recent signing of the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty, also known as the Treaty of Rarotonga, on March 3, 2025. This historic signing coincided with Nuclear Victims Remembrance Day, highlighting the Marshall Islands’ dedication to nuclear disarmament and the pursuit of a safer, nuclear-free region.

By agreeing to the Treaty of Rarotonga, the Marshall Islands expresses its intention to be bound by its principles ahead of future ratification. This move is seen as a vital step towards strengthening collective efforts in the Pacific region aimed at nuclear non-proliferation, a mission that aligns with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

In his remarks, Waqa emphasized the significance of this signing, stating, “This step demonstrates the nation’s unwavering commitment to nuclear disarmament.” He acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by the Marshall Islands, which has historically endured the consequences of nuclear testing, asserting that the signing serves as a symbol of solidarity and advocacy among Forum nations for a secure and nuclear-weapon-free Pacific.

Waqa’s statements resonate with his earlier comments made during recent commemorations of Nuclear Victims Remembrance Day, where he reflected on the enduring impacts of nuclear testing in the region. He highlighted the resilience and shared history of the Marshallese people, underscoring their spirit in overcoming adversity as a catalyst for unity and progress towards justice.

The Rarotonga Treaty, opened for signature in 1985 and entering into force in 1986, is a pivotal agreement that reinforces the region’s commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. The Republic of the Marshall Islands’ signing of the treaty carries significant implications given its historical context of nuclear testing and its ongoing advocacy for nuclear justice.

The actions taken by the Marshall Islands not only mark a moment of reflection on the past but also serve as an inspiring example for Pacific nations. This endeavor reinforces hope for a future marked by peace and collective responsibility toward nuclear disarmament and environmental protection, encouraging regional collaboration and healing.
