Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) chair Mark Brown urged Foreign Affairs Ministers from the region, gathered in Suva on Friday, to be self-reliant rather than relying on the goodwill of others. In his opening address at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Mr. Brown highlighted the growing geostrategic interests impacting the region.
“We continue to confront a climate crisis that worsens each year,” Mr. Brown stated. He emphasized that the region must also address new challenges, such as cyber-attacks and transnational crime, and work collectively to bolster political solidarity. This will ensure that when one member requires assistance, the forum can respond effectively.
He underscored the significance of unity, stating that amid these pressures, he is optimistic that the ministers are taking the opportunity to strengthen their shared goals and priorities.
“We can no longer rely on past successes or the goodwill of others. To achieve our shared vision for 2050, we must pursue a more strategic and assertive approach in our engagements,” he noted. This, he believes, will guarantee that partners align with their priorities and aspirations.
Mr. Brown encouraged open and constructive dialogue among the attendees, stating, “This is our space; let’s make the most of it.” As he nears the conclusion of his chairmanship, he expressed gratitude for the collaboration and support received from the ministers throughout his tenure.
“It has been a privilege for my government, my people, and myself to have been entrusted with this leadership role by the Forum’s members. I also want to acknowledge each of you for your support over the last 18 months,” he concluded.
