The Ministry of Employment and Workplace Relations has initiated an investigation into a serious incident involving a 23-year-old seafarer, Samisoni Dauloloma, who suffered significant injuries during a docking mishap. This incident has raised critical questions regarding workplace safety protocols in the maritime sector.
Line Minister Agni Deo Singh informed Fiji One News that the operational health and safety department is thoroughly investigating the circumstances that led to the accident. The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has also begun its own investigation, which is expected to conclude within two weeks.
The incident occurred as Dauloloma was working aboard the Lomaiviti Princess 11, where a heavy metal ram fell during docking, resulting in the severe crushing of his foot. Unfortunately, the extent of his injuries required amputation. Following the accident, Dauloloma’s family criticized the response from the shipping company, Goundar Shipping, stating that they felt unsupported and uninformed in the aftermath of the incident. His mother, Titilia Rakurukuru, expressed her heartbreak, noting that her son’s life was forever altered due to the injury, which she believes could have been prevented.
“We need justice from the shipping company, and I hope they compensate my son for this injury,” she stated passionately.
MSAF CEO Joeli Cawaki has acknowledged the serious implications of the incident, emphasizing that their inquiry will explore both the technical operations of the vessel and the staff’s safety adherence. Their focus will also address potential lapses in operational protocols.
This incident is not isolated; it aligns with growing concerns regarding workplace safety within the maritime industry, especially following similar accidents that have occurred in recent months. Previous incidents have highlighted systemic issues that require urgent attention.
