Digicel Junior Bula Boys Head Coach Marika Rodu has commended his players for their effort in the 1-0 defeat against New Zealand in the semifinals of the OFC U19 Men’s Championship in Apia, Samoa.
An emotional yet proud Rodu expressed that although their performance met expectations, the result did not go in their favor.
“We knew playing New Zealand in the semifinal would be challenging. We aimed to create movements and attack from chaotic situations, and I believe we did well in creating chances and defending excellently throughout the game.”
“They scored right after halftime, and we missed a penalty shortly after, failing to level the match despite having numerous scoring opportunities.”
“It is what it is. All I can say is hats off to the boys. They gave an excellent performance.”
Rodu highlighted that the players adhered to the game plan, demonstrating courage and belief in their ability to perform against teams like New Zealand.
“I hope this performance marks a new chapter in their playing careers.”
“On a personal level, I enjoy playing against New Zealand as it challenges me to refine my style of play and think strategically, and today was a great moment to apply our football principles.”
“I believe a momentary lapse in concentration led to us conceding the goal. Nonetheless, I always embrace playing New Zealand as they are formidable opponents within the Oceania region. New Zealand sets a benchmark.”
Reflecting on the journey, Rodu appreciated the six weeks spent with the team, recognizing their hard work to reach this stage.
Rodu and his team will return to action on Thursday to face the Solomon Islands in the third-place playoff.
