Marijuana Dominates Drug-Related Cases in Police Reports, Says Crime Prevention Coordinator

Marijuana continues to dominate the number of drug-related cases reported to the police, according to Divisional Crime Prevention North coordinator Inspector Vidya Pillay.

The senior police officer stated that 600 drug-related cases reported to the police in the first five months of this year involved marijuana.

“These were out of the 768 drug-related cases reported from January to May this year,” said Insp Pillay.

Among these cases, 168 were linked to methamphetamine.

“These are statistics that have shown policing efforts, but it does not have to define who we are as a society,” he emphasized.

He noted that the age group of 18 to 35 years old topped the category for drug-related offences.

“There were 517 individuals from the ages of 18 to 35 charged related to illicit drugs, followed by 36 to 55 years old with a total of 265, and 15 were over the age of 56,” he explained.

Insp Pillay highlighted that no age group was spared from the effects of illicit drugs.
