March for Kanaky and West Papua: Flag Controversy Unveiled

People who wish to join the Fiji Solidarity March for Kanaky (New Caledonia) and West Papua today are urged not to fly any flags for Israel or Palestine.

This request comes from the organisers of the march, set to begin at 10am from Rodwell Road to Constitution Avenue in front of Parliament.

The historic walk, in support of the New Caledonia and West Papua indigenous communities, is organised by the NGO Coalition on Human Rights. The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre applied for the permit to march with backing from the Pacific Conference of Churches and the Pacific Network on Globalisation.

The coalition has confirmed that permit applications have been approved by the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Roads Authority, and Suva City Council for the march.

Participants are asked to comply with one of the conditions of the permit by police, which stipulates that no flags for Israel or Palestine should be included in the procession.
