One of the two men charged with the aggravated robbery of a 57-year-old woman and her disabled son remains at large after failing to appear in court. Jashneel Pillay is currently sought after, as a bench warrant for his arrest has been issued.
The alleged robbery, which took place last year, involved Pillay and his co-accused, Mosese Vuniwai, who appeared in court before Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu. The crime reportedly occurred on January 22, 2023, when the suspects entered the victims’ bedroom late at night. One of the intruders held a cane knife to the woman’s neck while covering her mouth, while the others searched the house.
Though they attempted to flee in a getaway vehicle, police apprehended them shortly after. State prosecutor Pooja Mishra informed the court that police have reason to believe Pillay is somewhere in Nadi, but this information needs further verification. Two reports regarding the bench warrant have been filed, and the execution of the warrant is pending. The next court date for the bench warrant has been set for February 24 of the following year.
In a related case, co-accused Joseva Tuidama has admitted guilt and was sentenced last November to five years and four months in prison, with a minimum non-parole period of four years.
This ongoing case highlights the importance of ensuring justice for victims and the necessity of cooperation between law enforcement and the legal system in apprehending suspects. The authorities are actively pursuing leads, which offers hope that the case will soon reach a resolution.
Overall, this situation serves as a reminder of the dedicated efforts of law enforcement agencies in dealing with crime, and the hope that adequate measures can be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
