Three resilient women from the Western Division continue to brave the rainy weather in Suva City to sell mangoes, determined to support their families despite challenging conditions. Anaise Gucake, 55, Sereima Sabeta, 52, and Laisiana Tinaitukana, 52, each have unique backgrounds that drive their commitment to this endeavor.

Ms. Gucake transports mangoes from Vadravadra Village in Ba to Suva under the cover of night, aiming to sell them early the next morning. “We are grateful to the owner of Integrated Restaurant for allowing us to set up our table outside and for letting us use the restroom,” she said. Even after incurring significant costs—like a $45 bus fare for transporting her produce—she feels optimistic, as she can earn about $300 for a good day’s sales.

Sereima Sabeta, who is the primary provider for her family, has recently shifted to selling mangoes due to a downturn in her sugarcane cutting job. She explained, “When my sugarcane cutting drops, my husband rests, and I find ways like these to earn money for our family.” Although transporting her goods in larger quantities would cost around $400, she has found success selling at their current location, where customers continue to buy despite the weather.

Laisiana Tinaitukana, who usually sells root crops and vegetables, has joined the other two women at this bustling spot for the mango season. “This is the first time I’m doing this because I usually sell root crops and vegetables in Nausori,” she said. As the season starts to wind down, she is thankful for the earnings she has made, which will provide support for her family.

These women exemplify resilience and resourcefulness, demonstrating that challenges can be overcome with determination. Their ability to adapt and innovate in the face of adversity serves as an inspiring reminder that hard work often yields rewarding results.

In summary, this article highlights the determination of three women who continue to sell mangoes in Suva despite adverse weather conditions, showcasing their dedication to supporting their families and emphasizing the notion that perseverance can lead to success. Their hopeful spirit and strength are a testament to what can be achieved with hard work.
