For the past few weeks, Anaise Gucake, 55, Sereima Sabeta, 52, and Laisiana Tinaitukana, 52, have braved the challenging conditions, showcasing their determination to thrive despite obstacles.
Anaise Gucake shared her experiences, revealing that she travels from Vadravadra Village in Ba to Suva at night to sell mangoes the following morning. She expressed her gratitude towards the owner of Integrated Restaurant, who has provided her with a space to set up her table outside the establishment and access to restroom facilities. Gucake has been selling mangoes in front of the restaurant at Walu Bay for three weeks, facing considerable expenses but remaining optimistic about her income. She spends $45 for bus fare to transport her goods and could earn approximately $300 from a single sale, contingent on the quantity she brings.
Similarly, Sereima Sabeta, who is the primary provider for her family, highlighted her transition from sugarcane cutting to mango selling due to a decrease in her previous job’s availability. Her ingenuity shines through as she adapts to fluctuations in income to support her household. She noted the high transportation costs of selling larger quantities and emphasized that despite the crowded market, they have been able to attract buyers.
Laisiana Tinaitukana, who typically sells root crops and vegetables in Nausori, joined her colleagues at this market during the mango season. She shared how she prepared for the season by traveling to her son’s village, packing mangoes, and coming to Suva, where demand seems greater. The trio is pleased with their sales and the profits they are able to earn, which offer valuable assistance to their families.
