In Suva City, the rainy weather hasn’t deterred three determined women from the Western Division as they continue to sell mangoes. Braving the wet conditions over the past few weeks, Anaise Gucake, Sereima Sabeta, and Laisiana Tinaitukana are committed to supporting their families and covering expenses through their mango sales.

Anaise Gucake, aged 55, shared that she travels from Vadravadra Village in Ba to Suva at night to ensure she can start selling mangoes early the next day. Gratitude filled her voice as she acknowledged the owner of Integrated Restaurant, where she has set up her stall, for providing space and restroom access. Despite high transportation costs of $45 for bus fare, she finds the venture worthwhile as her sales can reach around $300, depending on the quantity she brings.

Sereima Sabeta, 52, who relies solely on her income to support her family, echoes Gucake’s resilience. As her sugarcane cutting job has slowed, she has pivoted to selling mangoes, demonstrating her ingenuity in maintaining her family’s financial stability. She highlights the financial burden of transporting larger quantities, with carrier costs reaching $400, but expresses happiness with the trade despite the Suva Municipal Market being crowded with sellers.

Laisiana Tinaitukana, also 52, contributes to the group by selling mangoes from Naivicula Village. She recently joined her peers in Suva during the mango season, traveling to her son’s village in Ba to source mangoes for sale. This marks her first attempt at selling mangoes, as she usually sells root crops and vegetables elsewhere.

These women exemplify resilience and determination, facing challenges head-on and proving that their efforts can bring both financial reward and personal satisfaction. Their commitment to their families and ability to adapt to changing circumstances represent a hopeful narrative of perseverance and empowerment.

Despite the hurdles they face, these women serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration, showcasing that with hard work and ingenuity, one can succeed even in challenging conditions. They return home with joy and pride for not only their efforts but the positive impact they make on their families through their dedication to their work.
