The rainy weather in Suva City hasn’t deterred three determined women from the Western Division who have been selling mangoes to support their families. Braving the wet conditions for several weeks, Anaise Gucake, 55, Sereima Sabeta, 52, and Laisiana Tinaitukana, 52, each have unique stories reflecting their resilience.
Anaise Gucake highlighted the challenges of transporting mangoes from Vadravadra Village in Ba to Suva, often making the journey at night to start selling early in the morning. She expressed gratitude toward the owner of Integrated Restaurant for allowing them to set up their table outside the establishment and for providing restroom access. Gucake has been selling mangoes at Walu Bay for three weeks, noting that her bus fare costs $45 to transport her supplies, yet she can earn about $300 from a single sale, with more bags leading to more profits.
Sereima Sabeta, the primary provider for her family, shifted to mango selling as her sugarcane cutting work has slowed down. She mentioned the high transportation costs associated with larger quantities, stating that a carrier would cost $400. Choosing to sell mangoes in Suva, where competition among sellers is high, she has still managed to attract customers.
Laisiana Tinaitukana, who usually sells root crops and vegetables in Nausori, decided to join the other two women recently. She mentioned that the current mango season allowed her to travel to her son’s village in Ba to gather mangoes for sale in Suva, a place where they are in demand. Thus far, she has been pleased with the sales, which have helped her family.
