Mandatory Parenting Courses: A Game Changer for Future Families?

All potential parents should be mandated to complete a parenting course prior to starting a family, according to a proposal discussed in Labasa during a consultation regarding the Child Care and Protection Bill.

Deepak Chand, an advisory council representative, emphasized the need for a course that covers essential elements of child-rearing, such as developmental milestones and effective parenting techniques.

“This initiative will significantly enhance parenting outcomes, particularly in a child’s first three years when they spend most of their time at home,” he stated. Chand noted that equipping parents with the necessary tools and knowledge would aim to improve long-term outcomes for children.

“The early years are vital as they establish the groundwork for emotional, social, and cognitive development,” he added.

He explained that the proposed course would provide structured support and practical guidance to help parents effectively manage these challenges.

“This initiative also responds to the increasing concerns regarding the complexities of modern parenting,” he mentioned, pointing out that shifting family dynamics and societal pressures leave many parents feeling unprepared or overwhelmed.
