Malimali Urges Patience Amidst FijiFirst Deregistration Appeal

Barbara Malimali, chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), has urged the public to remain patient while the commission reviews an appeal from Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj regarding the deregistration of FijiFirst.

In a media briefing, Malimali stated that the hearing is currently ongoing, and the EC is required to publish its findings once the proceedings conclude. She acknowledged the public’s desire for updates and assured them that information will be shared.

“The Electoral Commission is doing its best to ensure fairness for both parties involved,” she said. “At the end of the process, we will issue a press release with our findings, and despite the wait, it will be forthcoming.”

Malimali emphasized the commission’s preference to take the necessary time to reach a proper decision rather than rush the process. She mentioned that both parties have made submissions during preliminary hearings, and the commission is committed to listening to all perspectives.

“We have conducted preliminary hearings and need additional time to ensure we arrive at the correct decision,” she explained. “While it can be frustrating for some, we would rather take our time than make mistakes during this important process.”
