The chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), Barbara Malimali, has urged the public to exercise patience as the Commission addresses an appeal from Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj regarding the deregistration of FijiFirst. In a statement to the media, Malimali indicated that the hearing is currently ongoing, and the EC is required to publish its findings after the proceedings conclude.

She emphasized that the Electoral Commission is committed to fairness for all parties involved and acknowledged the public’s desire for updates, assuring that information will be forthcoming. “At the conclusion, we will issue a press release on our findings, and we will also publish those findings. I apologize for the wait, but it will come,” she stated.

Malimali noted that the EC prefers to take the necessary time rather than make hasty decisions. She explained that both parties have had the opportunity to present their cases during preliminary hearings, and it is vital for the Commission to listen to all sides.

“We’ve had preliminary hearings, and this process will take additional time. We are not going to rush it; we must arrive at the correct decision,” she said, underscoring that the hard work of hearing everyone is essential, even if it causes some frustration due to delays. The Commission is committed to ensuring all voices are heard regarding the appeal.
