Jese Dautei Robinson has etched a significant milestone in healthcare history as the only male nurse to graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery from Labasa, standing out among 12 fellow graduates. This impressive achievement is underscored by three prestigious awards he received for his exemplary academic performance, including accolades for Academic Excellence in Normal Puerperium and Newborn, Academic Excellence in Normal Labour and Birth, and Overall Academic Excellence in the program.
The 32-year-old from Vunikodi Village, Udu, Macuata, celebrated his accomplishments at the TISI Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education graduation ceremony held at the Civic Centre in Labasa. Mr. Robinson, who currently serves at the Nasea Health Centre, attributes his journey into nursing to a personal loss; the passing of his father, Veveni Robinson, during his Year 11. This experience fueled his determination to support his family and community.
His decision to specialize in midwifery carries a personal significance. Mr. Robinson expressed, “I chose to become a midwife, even though I am a male nurse, because I want to become a good father.” His dedication to patient care is mirrored by his wife, who also works as a nurse at Labasa Hospital. Motivated by the desire to witness the joy of childbirth firsthand, he upgraded his qualifications to assist mothers in delivering safely. “To help bring a life into this world and place it in a mother’s arms is the purest joy,” he shared.
Mr. Robinson also advocates for inclusivity within the nursing profession, stating, “Nursing is a beautiful profession where there is no boundary set between genders. I encourage people to pursue a career in this field.” Through his outstanding achievements and dedication to midwifery, Jese Robinson shatters stereotypes and inspires others to pursue their passions, illustrating that compassion and competence are not confined by gender.
This story serves as an uplifting reminder of the power of perseverance and the importance of breaking down barriers in the healthcare sector, encouraging both men and women to pursue their dreams in professions traditionally dominated by a specific gender.
