A contract worth $8.3 million has been awarded for the second phase of the redevelopment of Govind Park in Ba. The announcement was made by Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister of Housing and Local Government, during a groundbreaking ceremony held yesterday.
“We are embarking on phase two, which carries a total contract value of $8,343,383.69 FJD, and the project is expected to be completed within the next six to eight months,” Minister Nalumisa stated. He urged the Ba Town Council to take full responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of Govind Park once the project is finished.
The revitalization of Govind Park will introduce modern facilities, improved seating, better accessibility, and enhanced safety measures. These improvements aim to provide an exceptional experience for athletes, spectators, and community members.
Minister Nalumisa highlighted the necessity of reinvesting profits generated from the facility back into its regular maintenance and future upgrades. “The revenue from this facility should support its ongoing maintenance and future enhancements, including the potential addition of floodlights and other amenities, ensuring Govind Park remains a premier venue for sports and community events. This will help secure the longevity and sustainability of this iconic stadium for future generations,” he added.
He also acknowledged the iTaukei Land Trust Board for their support in granting permission to proceed with the second phase of the development. Minister Nalumisa expressed optimism regarding the project completion by the contractors, Western Builders Ltd and Heritage Fiji, looking forward to the grand opening of what will be a modern stadium representing collective achievement.
“The completion of phase two will stand as evidence of our shared effort and commitment to making Ba a vibrant and prosperous community. The new Govind Park grandstand will have a capacity of 9,000, excluding the embankment, which will be addressed in phase three.”
