Police have reported a significant drug bust involving a large quantity of marijuana on a shipping vessel arriving in Suva. A 31-year-old unemployed man from Kinoya has been arrested for unlawful possession of illicit drugs after customs officers discovered suspicious items during a routine search.
Upon inspection, authorities found a bag containing four parcels of dried leaves, which are believed to be marijuana, alongside more prohibited substances wrapped in various plastic bags and a black sulu. Specifically, the haul included seven clear zip-lock bags, 44 other zip-lock bags, and 572 branches of dried leaves.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized the significance of this operation, stating, “The above parcel was unclaimed. Our search on shipping vessels will continue in our efforts to eradicate drugs.” Driu also expressed gratitude for the tips received from community stakeholders that have empowered police efforts to confiscate drugs and apprehend suspects.
This incident aligns with previous efforts by the Fiji Police Force to combat drug trafficking. Past operations at Port Mua-i-Walu have seen similar arrests, indicating a relentless commitment to maintain community safety and integrity. Police are undertaking heightened surveillance on maritime routes and have initiated operations to uproot marijuana plants in various islands, showcasing their proactive approach.
The continuous support from the community plays a crucial role in these initiatives, fostering a collaborative effort in the campaign against drug-related crimes. With ongoing vigilance and cooperation, there is hope for a safer environment and reduced drug trafficking across Fiji.
