Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj has affirmed his commitment to appealing the deregistration of the FijiFirst Party. This comes after the Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF) announced it convened on Friday to address Mr. Maharaj’s appeal against the Registrar of Political Parties’ decision to deregister the party, effective July 1, 2024.
Maharaj described the situation as a work in progress pending court proceedings, emphasizing his determination to pursue the appeal. He invoked Section 12(4) of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act in his appeal against the FFP’s deregistration.
ECF Chairperson Barbara Malimali expressed satisfaction with the progress of the process and indicated that a decision will be published at its conclusion. She added that until then, the commission cannot make further comments and urged the public to exercise patience and understanding of the need for confidentiality in the matter.
