Maharaj’s Bold Appeal: What’s Next for FijiFirst?

Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj has confirmed his commitment to appealing the deregistration of the FijiFirst Party. His remarks were made in response to a statement from the Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF), which indicated that it convened on Friday to consider Mr. Maharaj’s appeal regarding the Registrar of Political Parties’ decision to deregister the party effective July 1, 2024.

Maharaj emphasized that while the matter is currently in court, he fully supports his decision to appeal the deregistration. He submitted his appeal per Section 12(4) of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act.

ECF chairperson Barbara Malimali expressed satisfaction with the progress of the proceedings. She stated, “We look forward to publishing our decision at the conclusion. Until then, we will not be in a position to comment. We trust the public of Fiji will understand this need for discretion and be patient.”
