Maharaj’s Appeal: Will the Electoral Commission Respond?

Former FijiFirst MP Alvick Maharaj has expressed that he is still waiting for a reply from the Electoral Commission. Maharaj had filed an appeal regarding the commission’s decision to deregister the FijiFirst Party, based on Section 12(4) of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act.

The move for deregistration was initiated following a complaint from former party member and current independent MP Mosese Bulitavu. He alleged that the party violated its own constitution by preventing the parliamentary Leader of Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, from attending meetings of its leadership committee.

The next hearing for the case is scheduled for August 15.
