Lynda Tabuya, the former Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, is set to learn her fate within the People’s Alliance (PA) party in the coming 21 days. This conclusion follows a meeting held by the party’s executive committee at their Suva headquarters, which addressed her upcoming disciplinary hearing.
Tabuya is currently undergoing her second disciplinary review within the party, having faced a similar situation earlier this year. In February, she was brought before the committee due to allegations related to a sex and drug scandal involving another minister, which resulted in her removal as the party’s deputy leader. The PA subsequently stated that these incidents had caused “potentially irreparable damage” to the party’s reputation.
The latest issue stems from a video that was leaked on Christmas Eve, in which Tabuya can be seen dancing nude—a video she confirmed is genuine. She asserted that the video was intended for her ex-husband, Robert Semaan, from whom she divorced in 2016, as stated during an investigation by FICAC. Following the video’s release, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka dismissed Tabuya from her ministerial position on December 26. Rabuka attended the recent executive committee meeting virtually from Savusavu.
In addressing the matter, PA’s general secretary, Sila Balawa, stated that the disciplinary process would be conducted in line with the party’s constitution. The disciplinary committee has a period of 21 days to finalize its review and provide findings and recommendations, with an emphasis on ensuring an independent process that respects the integrity and privacy of those involved. Tabuya will have the opportunity to present her perspective during this process. The committee’s members are not currently disclosed, although previous members included prominent figures such as Minister for Lands Filimoni Vosarogo.
